Pole Position, Fastest Lap and Victory – A Fitting Tribute at Brands Hatch

Legacy Outlaws Racing delivered a memorable and emotional victory at the Motor Racing Legends London Historic Trophy, held during the celebrations marking 100 years of Brands Hatch, as Chris Ward dominated the 2.0-litre Sports Car race in the Lola T292.

The T292, prepared by Complete Motorsport Solutions and Rob Bicknell, was immediately on the pace. Ward secured Pole Position in qualifying and lined up alongside the Lola T296 shared by James Claridge and Gonzalo Gomes, creating a front row made up of two cars that had both been raced in period by the late Guy Edwards.

The significance of that front row was not lost on anyone. Guy Edwards, renowned not only for his success behind the wheel but also for his role in helping save Niki Lauda's life at the Nürburgring in 1976, had sadly passed away just two days before the race. To see two of his former cars occupying P1 and P2 on the grid was a fitting tribute before a wheel had even turned.

When the race got underway, Ward quickly established control at the front and steadily built an advantage. By the time Gonzalo Gomes took over the T296 from James Claridge, the car was running in second place but was already around 30 seconds behind the leading Legacy Outlaws Lola.

Then came an unexpected challenge.

Gomes produced an impressive lap to set the fastest lap of the race. While it was unlikely he would have been able to close the gap to Ward, the Legacy Outlaws team had no intention of settling for anything less than perfection. The team quickly improvised a pit board reading “Push 4 L4P” – with an upside-down 7 cleverly used to create the missing “L”.

Chris got the message immediately.

In response, he lowered the benchmark once. Then he did it again.

Not content with merely reclaiming the fastest lap, Ward pushed on to set a time nearly a full second quicker than Gomes, ensuring the team completed the perfect weekend with Pole Position, Fastest Lap and Victory.

Sadly, Gomes' race ended prematurely when the T296 encountered mechanical problems, removing any remaining pressure at the front. From that point, Ward enjoyed a clear run to the chequered flag, eventually winning by more than a lap over the rest of the field.

The statistics tell only part of the story. Pole Position. Fastest Lap. Victory by over a lap. But the weekend meant far more than numbers.

For everyone involved, it was a chance to honour the memory of Guy Edwards. To see two of his former cars leading the field away from the front row and then to take such a dominant victory in one of them felt entirely appropriate. The result was dedicated to Guy's family, and it is difficult to imagine a more fitting tribute to a man who left such a lasting mark on motorsport.
