Some race weekends are defined by results.
Others are defined by resilience.
For Legacy Outlaws Racing, Le Mans Classic 2026 was a combination of both.
The iconic 53-year-old Lola T292 arrived at the Circuit de la Sarthe with Jan Magnussen driving solo throughout the weekend, ready to take on one of the most competitive Plateau 6 grids in recent years. Adding to the occasion, Saturday also marked Jan's 53rd birthday—a fitting coincidence as he celebrated behind the wheel of the 53-year-old Lola T292. It would prove to be a birthday weekend full of speed, setbacks, determination and ultimately an unforgettable fightback.
Qualifying
In scorching conditions, Jan immediately demonstrated the pace of the Lola. A lap of 4:11.121 secured fourth on the grid behind Richard Mille and Yves Scemama in the TOJ SC304 (4:05.483) and Maxime Guenat in the Lola T286 (4:06.567). While fourth wasn't quite where the team hoped to start, there was a feeling there was much more performance to unlock.
Unfortunately, qualifying ended with the first major challenge of the weekend when Jan reported losing fifth gear.
The gearbox immediately came out.
While most people were winding down after qualifying, Phil, Ben and Rob were only just beginning their work, stripping and rebuilding the gearbox to have the car ready for the next session.
Night Practice
As darkness fell over Le Mans, Jan produced one of the standout laps of the weekend.
His 4:12.139 put the Legacy Outlaws Racing Lola T292 at the top of the timesheets, while Richard Mille could only manage fifteenth fastest with a 4:49.178. Suddenly, confidence within the team was soaring. The T292 had genuine race-winning pace in the cooler night-time conditions.
Race 1
The first race got underway at 16:10 in punishing heat, with a track temperature of 48.7°C and an air temperature of 31.6°C.
Starting fourth, Jan drove superbly, working his way through the field to cross the finish line second overall.
It should have been the perfect start to the weekend.
Instead, heartbreak followed.
The Lola entered the mandatory pit stop just two seconds before the pit window opened. Such are the strict regulations at Le Mans Classic that this tiny miscalculation resulted in a devastating one-lap penalty.
Second overall instantly became tenth overall and fifth in class.
It was a bitter blow for everyone in the team after such a magnificent drive.
Then came another setback.
Once again, Jan reported losing fifth gear.
For the second time that day, the gearbox was removed and rebuilt.
Race 2
Originally scheduled to start at 00:10, Race Two was delayed by around an hour before finally beginning in dramatically cooler conditions, with the track temperature now down to 23.7°C and the air temperature just 17.7°C.
The earlier penalty meant Jan lined up only tenth on the grid, but what followed was one of the drives of the entire Le Mans Classic weekend.
Working relentlessly through the field, Jan set the fastest lap of the race with a 4:09.936, ahead of Guenat, while Mille and Scemama were third quickest.
The battle for victory quickly developed into an unforgettable duel between Jan and Guenat.
With the more powerful Lola T286 enjoying a clear advantage down the Mulsanne Straight, Jan had to be clever. Time and again he tucked into the slipstream, using every ounce of momentum before launching brave moves under braking. Every overtake had to be earned, every corner exit had to be perfect and every defensive line had to be precise.
For lap after lap the pair swapped positions in a breathtaking contest that had everyone watching on the edge of their seats.
It was historic racing at its absolute best.
Against the odds, Jan prevailed.
First overall. First in class.
An extraordinary victory after starting from tenth on the grid.
And once again gearbox issues reported as Jan advised the car had kept jumping out of 2nd gear. Another challenge followed…
This time it was second gear that required replacing.
For the third time in less than 24 hours, the gearbox came apart.
Race 3
Victory in Race Two earned Jan pole position for the final race, which began at 06:52 on Sunday morning as the sun rose over Le Mans.
Despite another fierce battle at the front against younger and more powerful machinery, Jan once again extracted everything from the Lola T292, bringing the car home third overall and first in class after another outstanding performance.
A Team Effort
The results tell only half the story.
Behind the scenes, Phil, Ben and Rob worked almost continuously from Saturday morning until Sunday afternoon. They rebuilt the gearbox three separate times—replacing fifth gear after qualifying, fifth gear again after night practice and second gear following Race One.
There was no sleep.
Barely a chance to sit down.
Coffee and snacks became the fuel that kept everyone going.
Yet not once did anyone complain.
Every challenge was met with determination, professionalism and an unwavering commitment to keep the Lola on track.
That spirit defines Legacy Outlaws Racing.

Overall Weekend Result: 3rd Overall in Plateau 6 and 2nd in Class.
There could hardly have been a more fitting way for Jan Magnussen to celebrate his 53rd birthday than by wrestling a 53-year-old Lola T292 to the very front of one of the world's greatest historic motorsport events.
The statistics will record a third-place overall finish and second in class. Those who witnessed the weekend will remember something far greater—a team that refused to give in, mechanics who rebuilt a gearbox three times without complaint, and a driver who delivered one of the standout performances of Le Mans Classic.
That is the spirit of endurance racing.
That is Le Mans.
There is little time to reflect on another memorable Le Mans Classic. Rather than returning home, the Legacy Outlaws Racing team heads directly to Circuit Charade in Clermont-Ferrand, where preparations for the next event begin immediately. The Lola T292 will be re-prepared at the circuit ahead of the Motor Racing Legends Trophées d'Auvergne, taking place just one week later. The iconic Charade circuit presents another new challenge, with both Jan Magnussen and Chris Ward making their first competitive appearances on the demanding venue. For the team, it's straight back to work—another car to prepare, another circuit to learn, and another race weekend to tackle. There is no rest, only the next challenge.
